EMSPI: Results of Energy Management Implementation

Press release: 25-02-2017: Results of Energy Management Implementation

The work within the EMSPI project has led to the successful implementation of energy management systems (EnMS) in 100 printing companies in five countries (Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Czech Republic and Spain).
The results for achieved energy savings achieved are good, leading to savings of approximately 40,000 GJ during the duration of the project. As regards the potential CO2 reduction the result so far are also very promising: this seems to be heading for more than 5,000 tons of CO2.
When we take into account the possible energy savings identified and included in the action plans of the companies, we will reach even higher savings. Assuming that part of the energy saving measures identified in each of the companies can be implemented, we will reach the following results for the period 2013- 2017:

  • Energy consumption reduction of 127,000 GJ (14% reduction in 2017 compared to 2013)
  • Reduction of 13,300 ton of CO2 (14% reduction of emissions).
  • Energy cost savings of 2,140,000 € (12% reduction of costs)

The printing companies interested in implementing the Energy Management System were able to choose one of the following options

  • Basic: Designed as a first step in EnMS. For organizations that cannot develop all the requirements of the ISO 50001 standard
  • Full: Leading to a complete implementation of the EnMS, assuming all the requirements of the ISO 50001 standard. For highly committed organizations.

The basic version was open to companies of up to 20 employees only (categorized as small). In the end, only 16 out of the 100 companies adopted the basic version. Among the other 84 companies, a significant number were small companies.

Activities in the companies

News of the EMSPI project (Energy Management Standardization in Printing Industry).  The five project partners from Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Spain and The Netherlands are implementing the Energy Management System in the SMEs. This project aims to promote actions to increase the energy efficiency at European small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Printing Industry by promoting the implementation of Energy Management System. This will make it for SMEs much easier to implement ISO 50001 energy management.

A specific adaptation of the global standard ISO 50001 is developed. This system will be implemented in the next period until September 2016. Also awareness on the benefits of energy efficiency tools will be disseminated to all the stakeholders in the industry in the participating European countries. In the companies the energy consumption and the CO2 footprint will be calculated. Measures to save energy will be affected. Therefore energy monitoring is an important part of this project to create relevant data of the effectiveness of energy management.

Implementing Energy Management System

The EMSPI project (Energy Management Standardization in Printing Industry) had a conference beginning of April 2016 in Prague, Czech Republic. The project is implementing the Energy Management System in the SMEs.
The EMSPI project aims to promote actions for increase the energy efficiency at European small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) of the Printing Industry by promoting the implementation of Energy Management System based on the global standard ISO 50001.

A specific adaptation of the global standard ISO 50001 for the energy management in printing SMEs and sector-specific implementation are developed. They are used to implement the specific energy management standard at 100 SMEs in the next period till September 2016. Also awareness on the benefits of energy efficiency tools will be disseminated to all the stakeholders in the industry in the participating European countries.

This will lead to the following results: the SMEs with a fulfilled energy management system will have potential on energy efficiency improvement. This will save energy, less CO2 and potential money savings in the future. Also we will inform SMEs to create awareness on energy efficiency and energy management and how to use tools and project materials within the industry in each country, through direct and indirect dissemination activities.

EMSPI: Significant potential for better energy management in the European Printing Industry

The EMSPI report ‘Energy Diagnosis of European Printing Industry’ evaluates the current status of energy consumption and energy management in the European printing industry. The energy diagnosis shows that despite differences in the size and complexity of companies in the European printing industry there are also common characteristics which seem to be the same in all the countries:

  • The energy sources are in general uniform except for local differences in the use of energy for heating.
  • The primary energy consumptions in the company are in general related to the same type of activities with production machines, heating, drying and ventilation as the most important.
  • The structure of the industry is the same since the industry primarily consists of small companies.
  • The general level of energy management in the industry is low due to a lack of knowledge about the performance and the potential for improvements
  • The uniformity of the industry provides a great potential for the impact of the EMSPI project. The report underlines the importance of addressing the following issues in the later work packages of the project:
  • Develop easy available tools to map, monitor, and analyse the energy consumption in the companies.
  • Point out adequate key performance indicators and benchmarking facilities.
  • Develop tools and guidelines are targeting small companies.

EMSPI project on track

The EMSPI project ( Energy Management Standardization in Printing Industry ) had  a conference beginning of December 2015 in Madrid, Spain. The project is on track. In the beginning of 2016 the implementing of the energy management system in the SME’s will start.

The EMSPI project aims to promote actions for increase the energy efficiency at European small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) of the Printing Industry by promoting the implementation of Energy Management System based on the global standard ISO 50001.

The main specific objectives of EMSPI project are the following:

  • To develop a specific adaptation of the global standard ISO 50001 for the energy management in printing SMEs and sector-specific implementation guidelines.
  • To implement the specific energy management standard at 100 SMEs (during lifetime project).
  • To enhance the awareness on the benefits of energy efficiency tools to all the Printing Industry stakeholders in European countries.

In the short term the following results are expected:

  • 100 SME’s with a fulfilled energy management system according to EN 16001 and/or ISO 50001 and potentials on energy efficiency improvement.
  • 000 GJ, 880 ton CO2 and 915.000 € of potential savings during the project lifetime
  • Awareness of 300 SME’s per country on energy efficiency and energy management and how to use tools and project materials within the industry in each country, through direct and indirect dissemination activities.

In the longer run, the project create a “critical mass” or multiplier effect at industry level in order to expand the developed set of tools and specific communication materials.
